This deluxe safari takes you to the most interesting places in Kenya while staying at some of the best accommodations available. The magnificently presented Olpejeta house, once the exclusive ranch house of multi-millionaire Adnan Kashoggi, stands at the centre of a private Conservancy that’s host to all the ‘Big Five’ and Largest Black rhino sanctuary in East Africa. Our next stop is Soysambu, a 48,000 acre wildlife conservancy and a wetland of international importance. The conservancy fringes lake Elementaita, home to vast flocks of flamingos and whose rocky islands are a nesting site for great white pelicans and a multitude of other waterfowl, many of them rare. The Conservancy protects over 15,000 wild animals. We then spend the next four days in the world-famous Maasai Mara, undoubtedly one of the best game reserves in the world. This is the stage for the annual wildebeest migration and home to some of the largest prides of lions in Africa. A hot air balloon safari is one of the highlights of this tour.
Day 1: Arrive Nairobi
Our representative will greet you upon your arrival at the Jomo Kenya International Airport and transfer you to the five star Nairobi Serena Hotel for overnight. 'A member of the leading hotels of the world', Nairobi Serena hotel is situated just outside the city centre overlooking Nairobi’s central park. Air-conditioned rooms are all en-suite with private facilities. There are a number of restaurants and bars, a swimming pool and a fine health club. Food and service is superb.
Day 2: Nairobi - Olpejeta
After breakfast we visit the giraffe centre where we will come face to face with the tallest animal on earth and even get to hand feed them from a raised platform. We then stop at Daphne Sheldrick’s elephant orphanage where you can interact with the baby orphaned elephants and possibly adopt one. Lunch will be provided at a local restaurant then we head north through the lush farmlands of central Kenya, viewing pineapple and coffee plantations on the way, to Olpejeta wildlife conservancy. We will arrive in the early evening and check in to Olpejeta house. Set in extensive grounds, with glorious views of Mount Kenya, this opulent mansion features a series of reception rooms, including an elegant drawing room with baronial fireplace and a series of scenic verandas, which extend right around the house. The grounds include two private swimming pools, a barbeque and an external dining area.
Day 3: Olpejeta
Before sunrise we will set out to track the big cats and other animals found here. We return for our sumptuous English breakfast at the house then spend mid morning enjoying the luxuries of Olpejeta house. In the early evening we will do another game drive in the conservancy and visit Baraka the tame black rhino as well as the chimpanzee sanctuary. After dinner we will do a night game drive in the conservancy, a chance to spot the nocturnal animals that are impossible to see during the day. The rare Aardvark, Genet cats and leopards are sighted with ease on a night game drive and this is one of the few places in Kenya where night game drives are allowed.
Day 4: Olpejeta - Soysambu
After breakfast we check out and depart. We shall skirt the Aberdare mountain ranges, with the peaks of Mount Kenya on our left as we descend the Eastern wall of the Great Rift Valley. We will stop over briefly at the Nyahururu falls and then continue further Southwest to Lake Nakuru national park. Lunch will be provided at a lodge in Nakuru before we embark on our comprehensive afternoon game drive in the park and around the lake. This is a major National Park and an important sanctuary for Rhino. Both black and white rhinos are found here, and are often seen resting under acacias by the Lake. The park abounds with game and this is one of your best chances to see a Leopard. Millions of flamingo, joined into a massive flock, fringe the shores of this soda lake. In the evening we shall leave this park for an hour’s drive to lake Elementaita where we shall spend the following two nights at the new luxurious Lake Elementaita Serena camp.
Day 5: Soysambu Conservancy
Uniquely situated on the shoreline of sapphire-blue Lake Elmenteita, where hundreds of thousands of birds congregate, the small and exclusive Lake Elmenteita Serena Camp is set in an area of breathtaking beauty that is home to many rare species of animals. The camp blends aristocratic elegance with modern luxury and offers cuisine and service of suitably high standards. Today we will explore this conservancy in our private Real Africa safari cruiser and also have ample time to relax and enjoy the camp.
Day 6: Soysambu Conservancy - Maasai Mara
After breakfast we shall drive leisurely to Nairobi and have lunch at the Carnivore restaurant. Before entering, we suggest you let out your belt a couple of notches – you’ll need the extra room! With every kind of roast meat imaginable (including crocodile or other game) on the menu, it’s a meat eater’s paradise. Waiters carve sizzling cuts from huge roasts on long spears right at your table. The choice is yours and the quantities are unlimited. There is also a tempting vegetarian menu, and plenty of tasty side dishes, fresh salads, delicious desserts and hot mugs of flavorful Kenyan-grown coffee and tea. In the afternoon we board a flight to the world famous Maasai Mara. We will land just in time for an evening game drive and transfer to Sanctuary Olonana Camp.
Day 7: Maasai Mara
This morning enjoy a hot air balloon safari – a once in a lifetime experience and the best way to appreciate Maasai Mara – from above! Glide freely over the endless savannas whilst the drama of nature unfolds below. Perhaps you’ll see a herd of Eland, the largest of the antelopes or set eyes on a pride of lions feasting on the previous night’s kill. But most awe-inspiring is the vista, unbroken by power lines or any sign of man’s habituation except perhaps the occasional Maasai manyatta (village) which have existed harmoniously here for centuries. After about an hour of drifting with the prevailing winds, going high or low according to conditions, the pilot sets down watching all the while for termite mounds! Now more fun begins as full champagne breakfast is served right on the open plain. A game drive completes the morning and we return to our camp. We will end the day with an evening game drive in the inner sections of the reserve.
Day 8: Maasai Mara
We will spend this day in the Mara with early morning and evening game drives. In the afternoon take a guided nature walk ending up at a Maasai Manyatta (village) located within walking distance from the camp. Here you will interact with the Maasai people, learn a lot about their way of life and enjoy a Maasai dance performance. Your camp, Sanctuary Olonana is an award-winning tented camp on a private stretch of the Mara River, at the foot of the impressive Siria escarpment close to where the famous last scene from “Out of Africa” was filmed. Game drives are done in the camp’s open-sided 4WD land cruisers in the rich western part of the Mara.
Day 9: Maasai Mara - Nairobi
After breakfast we bid farewell to our hosts at the Olonana camp as we are transferred to the airstrip for our morning flight back to Nairobi. Our representative will greet you with a friendly “Jambo” at the Wilson airport and transfer you to Nairobi Serena hotel. The afternoon will be spent at leisure in the hotel, reminiscing about your wonderful African safari. Tonight dinner is included at the Mandhari restaurant which offers an exclusive fine-dining experience. Considered by many to be Nairobi’s finest restaurant, Mandhari is renowned for the excellence of its seasonally inspired menu and extensive wine cellars. Mandhari is closed on Sundays and if this day on your safari falls on a Sunday dinner will be provided at the Alan Bobbie’s that also serves superb meals.
